The chronic, nagging pain of fibromyalgia can make it incredibly hard to function.
While the condition is not well understood, it has been determined that chiropractic care can be effective in reducing fibromyalgia pain.
What Is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that often waxes and wanes. Its cause has not been pinpointed, but it is generally thought that an issue with the body’s pain perception process leaves those who suffer from it far more sensitive to pain.
The symptoms of fibromyalgia include:
- Widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons
- Multiple tender points on the body
- Fatigue and difficulty sleeping
- Problems with memory and concentration
- Skin sensitivity
- Sensitivity to lights, noises and scents
To further complicate matters, people with fibromyalgia often struggle with other conditions too.
Fibromyalgia tends to coexist with mood disorders like depression or anxiety, sleep disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, and restless legs syndrome.
While fibromyalgia is not considered life-threatening, it can be incredibly disruptive.
How a Chiropractor Can Help
Most fibromyalgia sufferers struggle with low back pain and neck pain.
Since spinal manipulation is known to be effective in treating this type of discomfort, it is no surprise that chiropractors can often help individuals battling fibromyalgia to feel better.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, researchers conducted a study to examine how chiropractic treatments benefited women with fibromyalgia.
After undergoing 30 chiropractic treatments, participants reported a 77 percent decrease in the intensity of their pain, a 75 percent improvement in their fatigue and a 63 percent improvement in the quality of their sleep.
This relief continued for a month after treatment ceased.
While the study was small, it makes it clear that chiropractic care has the potential to reduce fibromyalgia pain.
